Reno is much smaller than its glitzy neighbor down south, but it still has all the best gaming options with one difference: it's more affordable to play in the Biggest.

Reno, Nevada/Peppermill Resort Spa Casino

I'll post something when I get back to summarize our trip. And, obviously, Tahoe is amazing. Not sure what you mean by dumpy places that are done well. It's not as big or flashy, but the gambling is better these days and it's more of a traditional casino experience, as opposed to Vegas, which has become more and more about shopping and clubs. WV is a small locals place with a great steakhouse, nicely done, and good gambling rules. I suggest Atlantis for great games in general. We played a slot that was in a timber box, like they had made it in the shed out the back Put in 20 and cashed lol. It's not a gambling destination, but there are a few bars with a bunch of slot machines. And it's a college town, so that brings some other fun stuff that's not casino-related. A nice side trip is Virginia City. But if you find yourself with a car , it's the kind of place you can toss back a reasonable number four ounce pours with your meal and not be too messed up to drive but pay attention to the ABV, which is listed on the digital menu board, as some beers have a lot of alcohol! The last time I was there a few years ago , there were still a few machines that took coins. If you want to return to Reno, stop by, sign up for a card, play a bit, then check your offers online. We've been to Vegas more times than I know. Got asked if we needed milk when we cashed out{/INSERTKEYS}{/PARAGRAPH} Wendy's in Carson City was the best dumpy place we have ever been to. Needless to say, don't leave valuables in plain view in your car in the parking lot. Might enjoy a live band in a lobby. I've heard the bowling museum is cool too, and don't miss Junkee, a big and excellent resale shop just outside of downtown. They're all sketchy like downtown LV used to be. Maybe the CalNeva. We're pondering a day trip to Lake Tahoe to see what the casino scene is there. The car museum is popular. The Nugget, Fandango, and Max Casino are a few that come to mind. This is exactly what we were looking for. Even if you only drop a few bucks, you might be surprised at how much they offer to get you back. But it's nothing special, and in the evenings it's very loud with a live band sometimes live karaoke? Do you have a Vegas example? Walking along the river is nice, and the Harrah's car museum is really excellent--I'd say it's on a par with The Henry Ford here in MIchigan. I've stayed there a few times now and like it. There is great bus service to both, if you drink. But if you skip it, I would recommend more time at the Pepp, and maybe check out the Atlantis. There are plenty of better places to get a beer in midtown. Staying at Legacy you will encounter the Brew Brothers brew pub in the adjacent Eldorado. Wondering if anyone has some advice for people very experienced in the Vegas scene. Just slots plus "anything" the gentleman in the carpark promises he can get you. Most bars have slots as well so if you want music, drinks and slots check out the bars down victorian ave in sparks by the nugget! It is far from a dump, but it's smaller and more intimate than most casinos offering its range of games and food. Comp offers are easy there, so if you pass it on the freeway, stop by, sign up for a players card, drop a few bucks in a machine, and see what they send you. My favorite beer bar anywhere, Beer NV -- which of course is pronounced, "beer envy," and which I only mention because I was too slow to figure it out until I heard them answer the phone! You should definitely get up to Tahoe, though the casinos aren't very lively, to me. There are many breweries and pubs with multiple taps, including quite a few within walking distance of Legacy. We like the smaller places that might be run down a little but have a lot of charm and are reasonably clean and maintained. It would be an expensive cab or uber trip, as it's about 9 mi from downtown. If you find yourself in North Tahoe, there are a few similarly small dive-y but not sketchy casinos, the Biltmore, Crystal Bay and the Nugget. There is a Gilley's in the Nugget in Sparks. Thanks in advance for any suggestions! The overdone megaresorts on the strip just aren't our thing anymore. The Santa Fe is pretty dumpy and the food has gone downhill in recent years so I really can't recommend it. You can Google for bands, and other events. Don't try to drive. I think you're on the right track. In Vegas , I really miss the Boardwalk and the casino where Big Elvis played can't think of the name I like to drink and hate to drive on vacation. It's the opposite of a dump, but if you like to gamble, it's pretty good. We have an affinity for "dumpy" places that are done well. Dress down and do not walk anywhere from that casino -- wheels only! Western Village "Villagio," as I call it because of its Peppermillian attempt at a Tuscan theme has a good blackjack game, decent restaurants, and the many local patrons suggest that its machines are on the loose side. BTW, they don't serve food, but you can bring your own, and some of the restaurants in the complex will even deliver hot food to your bar stool! Last thing anyone needs is a DUI on vacation or ever for that matter. I'll take any other pointers anyone has. Thanks so much for the info! They have free tourneys midweek. I love Reno , and I've been to Vegas plenty of times. I'm picking up that it's a terrible idea to both there. You can find most of them on this map:. Some food suggestions for old-school, famed, non-hipster or unique to Reno places:. Boomtown on I in Verdi has been around a long time. {PARAGRAPH}{INSERTKEYS}We'll be heading to Reno for our first trip there in 2 weeks. Really looking forward to checking it out. The hotel is big but the casino is pretty small. They serve 4, 8 and 16 oz pours at pro-rated prices i. Will be checking out the Peppermill and Western Village based on what I've read. Louis' has a fun happy. Don't forget to sign up for and use your players cards when you gamble, as Reno casinos are quite generous with free room offers and the like. Even if you've seen your share of big lakes already, there's nothing else like it. If you like dumpy places done well then western village is your place. On your way to or from Tahoe, pass through Carson City for some more small dive-y but not sketchy casinos. The time I did a signup promo at Gold Dust West, police shot someone who tried to run them over in the parking lot! Mummers, elbow room, victoran saloon, paddy and irenes. I don't know for sure, but any discerning uber driver would be wise to avoid it because you never know who wants to rob you! It also has decent rooms and rates -- the only casino hotel without a resort fee in the region excluding the truckstop an exit down the road. Finally, far from a dump, Grand Sierra Resort is very generous with free room comps and more. Is it worth it? We enjoy things that are a little out of the ordinary. You may catch some live music or other event there depending on your timing. FWIW, you might have a difficult time getting an uber from Diamond's. Was fun for a while but looking forward to the toned down version. It isn't exactly a dump, but it has a decent blackjack game. I'm sure you can get a cab from the attached hotel Ramada , but it is a seriously sketchy area. After reading around, we booked at the Silver Legacy. Reno is more of a blue-collar gambling town. Now, we're trying something we haven't done. If you like smaller working class casinos, you'll like Reno! A few years ago, we tired of the strip and moved to downtown. It is in Sparks, but just a few miles from downtown and the Grand Sierra. The steakhouse at Western Village in Sparks , old-school and really good. We like to eat, drink and gamble.
